Feeling vexed? Turn your frustration into a product or service

My first typewriter (well, technically my dad’s - but the first thing I ever typed on)

This week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Naomi Dunford of Ittybiz, who taught me how to write in my own voice many years ago, in the early days of the blogosphere.

Turns out that one of my favourite Ittybiz products, a ridiculously fun copywriting course, was actually borne out of Naomi’s massive frustration with existing copywriting courses.

These were all aimed at people who wanted to become copywriters.

Which is to say, they were way too:

  • complicated

  • expensive

  • long

Knowing that what small business owners probably want least of all in the world (apart from doing their taxes) is to train to become copywriters, Naomi decided to create the perfect product for her Niche:

Title page from the Copywriting Course

‘Copywriting for people who categorically do NOT want to be copywriters when they grow up’ (I can share a screenshot of this 10+ year old course with you because I still use it from time to time - it is that hilarious and that good).

She turned her frustration into something incredibly useful and fun - and made a shit ton of money in the process.

As a smart human you’re probably frustrated relatively often by products or services that, within your personal and/or professional context, seem utterly useless.

So this weekend, instead of letting all the energy build up inside, why not do yourself and others a favour and think about turning your biggest frustration into a product?

Start with a list of Pet Peeves - it’s a great way to vent on paper.

Write at least 10 - you know you have them.

And then look at your list.

You may want to have a little giggle when you see them all sitting there on a piece of paper - but after that, ask yourself:

Is there something here I can easily create within a couple of hours/days/weeks (whatever your current capability is)?

If so: please create it. People like me will thank you - and probably gladly hand over our money.
