Why you’re not going after your dreams
It sounds so inspiring to ‘go after your dreams’.
So energising and delightful.
Yet few people actually do.
One of the reasons is a lot more banal than you might think: it’s actually not planning the time to do it.
It’s probably not a problem for you to ship stuff to clients in time.
If you’re like most people I work with, you’d probably rather move to a new country than disappoint a client.
You’d rather crawl under a rock than let the team down.
And you’d move heaven and earth to help a family member.
But when it comes to carving out time for things that are ‘just’ for you…all of a sudden it becomes very difficult.
When the only accountability your have is to yourself, all of a sudden it’s a lot harder to stick to your plans. To keep your promises.
You decide not to work out.
You don’t write the book.
You don’t contribute in the way you want to.
Because you don't plan - and stick to it.
And every time you break the promises you’ve made to yourself, what you’re really communicating is this:
“My dreams don’t matter. I'm not a priority.”
Not making your own essential plans at least as important as other people’s undermines your self-worth and energy level.
Stop it.
How?
Carve out non-negotiable blocks of time for yourself and your plans.
Start small - try 20-30 minutes first.
Decide what you’re going to do - and when - ahead of time.
And decide NOW that nothing except a real emergency or natural disaster will stop you.
Nothing.
Make it sacred - and make breaking your promise the biggest taboo.
It may take some getting used to.
It may take some adjustment - especially if you’ve conditioned other people to count on your constant availability.
But you can do it - and you owe it to yourself.
What is that massively important thing you want to make time for?
Plan it right now.
For this weekend.
And if you find it hard to do this on your own don’t worry - I’ve got you.
